An excerpt from: Allie Armadillo Gives A Helping Hand

Jamie Harris liked visiting the pond near his house to feed the ducks and his mother always kept the stale bread for him to throw to them.

One day when his mother told him she was going to be late coming home from work, Jamie decided to spend the time waiting for her at the lake.

When he arrived, the ducks were waddling away from the lake into the wooded area nearby. His mother had warned him never to enter the woods alone but he ignored this warning in his eagerness to see where the ducks were going.

As he entered the wooded area, his attention was caught by what looked like a moving bicycle helmet, grunting softly.

An excerpt from: The Beavers Save The Farm

Jeremy Stonehouse loved the forest in which he lived. His house was a log cabin overlooking a huge, beautiful lake. They weren't rich. His father was a farmer. This land had been handed down from Jeremy's great grandfather. They farmed wheat beyond the tall trees of their own private forest.

But more than the forest, which Jeremy was secretly quite afraid of, he loved the lake.

He loved to canoe on the lake and swim and fish in the lake. He loved to watch a circle of ripples spread on the water when he cast a stone on its mirrored surface. Best of all, he like to fish from the deck in the early evening and watch the beavers .............

An excerpt from: Bessy Badger Helps A Friend

Winter came early to the woodlands where Bessie Badger lived but she felt warm and protected in her set some three feet underground. Because she would be staying in it throughout the winter, she had made many entry tunnels and quite a few roomy 'bedrooms' so that the air flowed freely.

Nestled on her bed of dry leaves and grass, her keen sense of hearing picked out the sounds above her. The loud chortling of Tom's truck as it meandered down the dirt road and the grating of the gears as he changed down to take the turn onto the crunchy gravel strewn driveway and the grind of the brakes that warned of worn-out pads as he came to a stop outside the house. Then came the sobs.

An Excerpt from: A Meal For Frankie Fox

George Winters Jnr. was excited about going fishing with his Dad. They had never been away together without his mom and three annoying sisters.

They were going to camp in the forest in their new two-man tent. Inside the large cooler packed with ice, were all their provisions. No burgers and fries where they were going

George Jnr. looked around; there was no one in sight. No cars or trucks and no houses or shops. Only trees. They stood tall and proud like soldiers in green uniforms, lining the road.

It looked so mysterious, yes, and scary too. He wondered what kind of animals lived in the forest.

An excerpt from: Peppi Porcupine Says He's Sorry

Peppi shuffled along the ground, his porcupine nose sniffing. His stomach rumbled from hunger but it was something salty he wished for most of all. Delicious, tangy salt. He reached the edge of the woods he'd been traveling through for some time and stopped. The giant full moon which had been hidden by trees suddenly beamed its silver light onto an open field. He squinted despite the bright moonlight, trying to see what was in the open space.
